Abstract: The goal of this programme is to better understand the Low-Ionization Structures (LISs), commonly found in Planetary nebulae (PNe). Previous studies on short-wavelength-range couldn't answer whether UV pumping or shocks is the main excitation mechanism of H2, or about their origin as fossils of AGB stage or in situ formed. X-shooter provides a unique set of spectroscopic data from 350 to 2500 nm, to investigate the link among the fully, partially ionized and neutral gas in LISs, from the outer to the inner layers and to the core, and make a major step towards developing a comprehensive, multi-wavelength picture. This project uses X-shooter to obtain the first UV-to-NIR spectra from a sample of 12 LISs with different shapes and types in 9 PNe with a variety of morphologies, ages and stellar parameters.
