Descriptions
Abstract: The primary goal of the VST Photometric Halpha Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge (VPHAS+) was to collect single-epoch ugri broad-band and Ha narrow-band photometry across the southern Galactic Plane within the latitude range -5 < b < +5 deg, down to point source magnitudes of ~21 or better. For reasons of resource limitations, the survey terminated in August 2018, omitting some parts of the 4th Galactic quadrant. The VPHAS+ footprint expands to include the inner Galactic Bulge, defined as a 20 x 20 deg2 box around the Galactic Centre. For all massive OBA stars this survey is deep enough to explore all but the most heavily obscured locations of the southern Plane, reaching up to 10 kpc from the Sun. The narrowband data yield a uniform view of southern emission line stars, giving more robust statistics on important scarce object types. The wide-area broadband photometry obtained can facilitate stellar population studies, tracing structure over much of the southern Plane. VPHAS+ data are also suited to trawling the star-formation history of the Galaxy as seen in stellar remnants of all types.
More information on the four VPHAS+ data releases can be obtained from https://www.vphasplus.org/data.shtml. Releases 1, 2 and 4 at the ESO archive contain CASU-processed files, while release 3 includes tiles generated by WFAU, Edinburgh.
